Key # 1 - Prioritize regenerative resources: Ensure that renewable, reusable and non-toxic resources are used as materials and energy efficiently. The argument is that the planet is the global ecosystem, source of the necessary resources for society and, at the same time, discharge of all waste caused by economic activity. As the planet is finite, the global ecosystem obviously has limits as a source of resources and regenerative capacity, and as an assimilation capacity
Key # 2 - Preserve and evolve what is already done: While the resources are in use, maintain them, repair them and update them to maximize their useful life and grant them a second life through return strategies when appropriate. A basic principle is to preserve complexity: the preservation of ecological diversity is a central source of resilience for the planet. The material and energy losses are tolerated to preserve biodiversity. It is a much higher priority. Habitats, especially rare ones, should not be invaded or structurally damaged by human activities
Key # 3 - Use waste as a resource: Use waste streams as a source of secondary resources and recover them for recycling and reuse. Give priority to the preservation of the complexity of the material, by cascading the materials in their most complex form for as long as possible. Material cycles are designed to be of lengths that are relevant on a human time scale, appropriate to the natural cycles to which they are connected, combined with the shortage of materials and as geographically short as possible. Materials should not be mixed in such a way that they can no longer separate and recover purely, unless they can continue to complete an infinitely high cycle in their mixed form. The material should be used only when necessary
Key # 4 - Rethinking business models: Consider opportunities to create greater value and align incentives through business models that are based on the interaction between products and services towards a circular economy. Rethinking value chains to boost the productivity of resources. Recently, the circular economy has attracted a lot of attention from a wide audience, from policy makers, scientists, NGOs and, often, large companies. However, its impact on finance has attracted less attention. We encourage correcting this situation as finance turns out to be a formidable facilitator of the transition to a circular economy
Key # 5 - Incorporate digital technology: Identify and optimize the use of resources and strengthen connections between actors in the supply chain through digital platforms and technologies capable of interoperating, providing reliable and timely information. Assimilate new knowledge and open to new technological horizons. Internet of Things and BlockChain are here to stay, they will mark a time and it is essential to incorporate these magnificent opportunities into the Production and Business Systems. The economic system is inherently adaptable and resilient. The economic system has government systems, incentives and mechanisms that allow it to respond to crises in general and systemic crises. This refers to the distribution of power, the structure of information networks and the guarantee that there are backups in case of failures of parts of the system. The same resilience principles apply to both large and small scales
Key # 6 - Design for the future: Consider the perspective of the systems during the design process, use the appropriate materials, design for an adequate useful life and design for a prolonged future use. Product and service design is the engine capable of accelerating the transition to a circular economy. Creating innovative products and exploring new ways of providing services is a means by which the circular design comes to life and expresses itself. In our organization, designers are the agents of change for circular businesses and play a key role in making the circular economy a priority in future strategies
Key # 7 - Collaborate to create joint value: Work together throughout the supply chain, internally, with our interlocutors -clients and suppliers- and with the public sector to increase transparency and create joint value. Join forces through value chains, interact with other companies and stakeholders to eliminate barriers and work on joint solutions that generate growth and reduce impacts. To achieve a circular transformation requires working as a team in all areas: R+D+i, procurement, supply chain, manufacturing, marketing, involvement in public services...
